Self-Publishing on Amazon: The No-Nonsense Guide
Thinking about self-publishing your first book on Amazon? I've been helping authors navigate this journey since 2010, and I'm going to walk you through exactly what you need to know to get your book out into the world without losing your mind in the process.

Let me guess. You've written a book (or you're close to finishing), and now you're staring at the mountain of information about Amazon self-publishing, feeling completely overwhelmed.
I get it. When I published my first book back in 2010, I spent hours down rabbit holes, clicking through endless forums and contradictory advice. But here's the good news: self-publishing has become much simpler, and I'm going to break it down for you in a way that actually makes sense.
After publishing over 400 books for clients and becoming a 6x Amazon bestselling author myself, I've learned what actually matters and what's just noise. Let's get your book out there.
Getting Your Book Ready for Amazon KDP
Before you even think about uploading anything to Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing, that's Amazon's self-publishing platform), you need three things sorted:
1. Professional Book Formatting
This isn't optional. I've seen too many brilliant books get terrible reviews simply because the formatting was a mess. Your readers expect:
- Proper chapter breaks
- Consistent fonts and spacing
- A clickable table of contents for ebooks
- Professional margins and page layout for print books
You can either learn to do this yourself (it takes time but it's doable) or hire someone. Trust me, it's worth getting right the first time.
2. A Cover That Doesn't Scream 'Amateur'
Your cover is doing the heavy lifting in your book marketing before anyone reads a single word. I learned this the hard way with my first book. I thought I could cobble something together myself. I was wrong.
Look at the bestsellers in your genre. Your cover needs to fit in with those while standing out enough to catch attention. It's a fine balance.
3. Your Metadata Sorted
This means:
- Your book description (this is sales copy, not a summary)
- Your keywords (these help readers find your book)
- Your categories (choose wisely, you get two)
- Your author bio
Get these right and Amazon's algorithm becomes your friend.
The Actual Publishing Process on Amazon KDP
Right, let's talk about the mechanics of getting your book live. It's actually quite straightforward once you know the steps.
Setting Up Your Account
Head to kdp.amazon.com and create an account. You'll need:
- Your tax information (yes, even if you're in the UK)
- Banking details for royalty payments
- Basic information about you as the publisher
This bit can feel tedious, but just work through it methodically. Have a cup of tea handy.
Uploading Your Book
You'll create either a Kindle ebook, a paperback, or both. I always recommend starting with the ebook because it's simpler and there's no upfront cost.
The upload process walks you through each step:
- Enter your book details
- Upload your manuscript file
- Upload your cover
- Preview how it looks (don't skip this)
- Set your pricing
- Hit publish
Your book typically goes live within 24-72 hours. Magic, right?
Pricing Your Book (Without Underselling Yourself)
Here's where people get weird. They either price their book at 99p (don't do this unless you have a specific strategy) or at £15.99 for a 150-page book (also don't do this).
Look at comparable books in your genre. Price competitively but don't be the cheapest. Amazon offers two royalty options:
- 35% royalty (you can price as low as £0.99)
- 70% royalty (must be priced between £2.99 and £9.99)
For most authors, the 70% option makes more sense. Price your ebook between £2.99 and £4.99 to start.
What About Audiobooks?
Glad you asked. This is my favourite bit. The audiobook market is growing like crazy, and many authors are missing out.
Audiobook production used to be expensive and complicated. It still requires investment, but the returns can be brilliant. You have a few options:
- Record it yourself (if you've got a decent voice and microphone)
- Hire a narrator through ACX (Amazon's audiobook platform)
- Work with a production company (like us)
I've seen audiobooks outsell ebooks for some authors. Don't sleep on this format.
Building Your Author Platform Matters
Here's the truth bomb: publishing your book is the easy bit. Getting people to actually buy it is where the real work begins.
You need an author platform. That means:
- An email list (start building this now)
- Some social media presence (pick one or two platforms)
- A simple website or at least an Amazon author page
- Ideally, a podcast (I'm biased, but it works)
You don't need to be everywhere doing everything. But you do need to be somewhere, consistently showing up and connecting with your ideal readers.
The Marketing Bit (Sorry, It's Necessary)
Publishing your book without book marketing is like opening a shop in the middle of nowhere and wondering why no one's buying anything.
Start simple:
- Tell everyone you know about your book (seriously, don't be shy)
- Get early reviews (reach out to your network)
- Run a launch promotion (make some noise)
- Keep creating content that connects to your book's themes
Marketing doesn't have to be sleazy or overwhelming. It's just about connecting with the people who need what you've written.
Your Next Steps
Self-publishing on Amazon isn't rocket science, but it does require attention to detail and a willingness to learn as you go. I've made plenty of mistakes over the years so you don't have to.
The most important thing? Just get started. Your first book won't be perfect, and that's completely fine. You'll learn more from publishing one imperfect book than from spending another year researching and never taking action.
